It's a playful twist on our traditional thumbless mini mittens for babies. </p><p>This striped version is knitted in the round with a lightweight 3 yarn. I chose K+C Smooth because it knits up so nicely for something this delicate. There's a wide variety of colorful and neutral options for creating many stripe combinations.</p><p>Since knitting in the round is actually a spiral, it can be tricky to keeps stripes looking even with a "step" in between rows. As always, Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book helped me figure out how to solve this tricky problem! This pattern uses the jogless join technique to keep the striped rows even. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/916703728/striped-baby-mittens-knitting-pattern" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="794" data-original-width="794" height="400" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/60b751/2803736613/il_794xN.2803736613_q7fu.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><h4 style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/916703728/">Buy the pattern on Etsy</a></h4><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/916414024/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="794" height="300" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/f82f46/2751971396/il_794xN.2751971396_j5bf.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><h4 style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/916414024/">Shop finished striped mittens</a></h4>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7107667727200567158.post-58078121315231042602020-12-19T20:34:00.002-05:002021-01-02T20:43:14.415-05:008 Years and 900 Sales!<p>The year 2020 marked eight years of the Marion’s Mittens shop and we reached the milestone of 900 sales on Etsy. Even though it was a hard year to be apart from friends and family, I was still able to spend a little time with Marion to learn how to knit her socks. She checked in with me by phone every night for a week while I figured them out. More on that in another blog post!</p><p>Red mittens were far and away the most popular color of 2020. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8gxepvP2k3Aswua01pyndhEgzJ9-4_xWyxsLsE_CKt-LIMe9Eu53B3WuCh4BL-_F1-0FGrTrl2NHGNY-58uXFf_sDiT2FjvzwPm6FDPF69KKL3j5OPOA2xtkIbXA2Vrs5J4lQpcLwiwA/s2048/B7ADD31B-1D82-443B-A61F-2EE5143241B8.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8gxepvP2k3Aswua01pyndhEgzJ9-4_xWyxsLsE_CKt-LIMe9Eu53B3WuCh4BL-_F1-0FGrTrl2NHGNY-58uXFf_sDiT2FjvzwPm6FDPF69KKL3j5OPOA2xtkIbXA2Vrs5J4lQpcLwiwA/s320/B7ADD31B-1D82-443B-A61F-2EE5143241B8.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>And my double moss cowl pattern was the most popular pattern in the shop. <div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Cl3avXtCMdCf6hmk9mSMgHXehoRjEkS0en46m2PQT1yiXhP_G6efR8qlp8J-fPo311MF8pqe2Jdaoq_Otine_-Vi6Jm8M8AnX_LqjWskLQr1lAA0KMXPXxtmqTN6WXzF3V6gv9hpCC4/s672/KnittingPattern.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="672" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Cl3avXtCMdCf6hmk9mSMgHXehoRjEkS0en46m2PQT1yiXhP_G6efR8qlp8J-fPo311MF8pqe2Jdaoq_Otine_-Vi6Jm8M8AnX_LqjWskLQr1lAA0KMXPXxtmqTN6WXzF3V6gv9hpCC4/s320/KnittingPattern.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>As always we got to work with some amazing customers who left such kind reviews of our shop. One weekend in October we visited the Battenkill Fibers Carding & Spinning Mill as part of the <a href="https://soadkfiberproducers.org/" target="_blank">Farm to Fiber Tour</a>. The owner of the mill gave us a tour and we explored a bit on our own as well!</p><p>This mill is special because each sheep (or alpaca) owner gets back their original fleeces. It's not a cooperative where what you get back might not be the same quality you sent in. Everything was carefully labeled and while it seemed a bit chaotic to us, the owner knew what everything was and where it was going!</p><p>Scroll through the photos below to see the process:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Fleeces ready to be worked on</li><li>Washed wool that is drying</li><li>Ready to be processed</li><li>Carding</li><li>Drafting</li><li>Spinning</li></ol><p></p>

The <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fiberuarychallenge/?hl=en">#FiberuaryChallenge</a> provides a daily theme for posting yarn art photos to Instagram. Here's what I've come up with at the halfway point:<br />

Over the winter break I spent a lot of time getting my <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/people/MarionsMittens/stash">yarn stash</a> organized and cataloged in Ravelry. I have a lot of yarn! This is mostly because I keep almost every color of Caron Simply Soft on hand at all times. Since I never know when I'll get a request for a custom pair of mittens or to add on a string to a kid's pair, it's just easier to have them all here.<br />
<br />
In addition to these easy-care acrylics that are the staple for our mittens, I'm also starting to grow a collection of natural fibers. Some of these are commercial yarns and others are hand dyed.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Commercial Wools</h3>
Cleckheaton Superfine Merino is a 100% wool Australian yarn. It used to be sold at Joann's and I was so sad when they stopped carrying it. It's wonderful for baby hats.<br />
<br />

<br />
I picked up a skein of Sonoma's Baah yarn in Bermuda. Haven't used it yet, but it's very pretty!<br />
<br />

<br />
Fair Isle Nantucket is an 80% acrylic, 20% wool blend, but the wool definitely amps up the quality of this yarn. It's bulky but knits up smoothly without splitting. I love it for my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/678396935/">Double Moss Stitch Cowl pattern</a>.<br />

I can't remember where I picked this one up. It's very sheepy. :) </div>

This was my lone purchase at the Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival last year. It's a beautiful Pandia's Jewels hand dyed Merino/Nylon/Stellina blend. It's her Dazzle yarn and the colorway is Yarn Magic. </div>

Alpaca</h3>

I purchased this September Morning Alpacas yarn right at their farm during the Washington County Fiber Tour one year. I also purchased it in purple, but can't find the photo of that. I made it into a pair of mittens. </div>

This yarn came from a local festival. I got to meet the alpaca it's from! He's black and white and these twisted fibers are both from him. I made this into a pair of mittens and have a tiny bit left.</div>

My cowl scarf <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/678396935/">knitting pattern</a> continues to be popular. Eight people have it in their carts as I write this! Lots of people are using it to DIY their own projects, and my finished cowls keep selling out in the Marion's Mittens Etsy shop.<br />
<br />
As a result I've been knitting lots more cowls and decided to offer cowl and mittens sets in my shop. Here are the sets that are finished so far:<br />

We just completed our seventh year on Etsy! This was a slower year than in the past - my real job has been busy and so knitting has taken a bit of a backseat. We still accomplished quite a bit in the past year.<br />

The Hook Nook Collab</h4>
I had the opportunity to guest post on The Hook Nook blog again this year! This time around I wrote about the pros and cons of selling made to order vs. from an inventory. Last year I taught myself to crochet <a href="https://marionsmittens.blogspot.com/2018/08/learning-to-crochet-one-stitch-and-one.html">one afghan at a time</a>. This year I continued to practice crocheting, mostly the double crochet stitch, and expanded on my stripe variations.<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Treble Crochet and Shell Stitch</h4>
I picked up where I left off last year with the treble crochet stitch AND experimented with adding a shell stitch border.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/685644925/"><img alt="pink baby afghan" border="0" data-original-height="529" data-original-width="794" height="266" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/623ea1/1838288445/il_794xN.1838288445_7ejt.jpg" title="pink baby afghan" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Two Blue Stripe Projects</h4>
Next I made two blue striped afghans in a row. They were slightly different colors but both in double crochet. The first was a gift. I finished it the night before it was to be given (nothing like coming in just under the wire) and forgot all about taking a picture.<br />
<br />
Here's the second one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/724446492/"><img alt="blue stripe baby afghan" border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="640" height="266" src="https://images4-g.ravelrycache.com/uploads/MarionsMittens/649302424/upload_medium2" title="blue stripe baby afghan" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Strawberries and Cream</h4>
Another double crochet project, I made this one in shades of pink and cream. It was pretty popular on Instagram - I'm thinking of releasing a pattern for this one. What do you think?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/724940240/"><img alt="pink and cream baby blanket" border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="400" src="https://images4-g.ravelrycache.com/uploads/MarionsMittens/651048814/upload_medium2" title="pink and cream baby blanket" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Burgundy and Fuchsia </h4>
This time I experimented with some less traditional baby colors. It's another double crochet afghan with bolder stripes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/728407234/"><img alt="burgundy and fuchsia striped blanket" border="0" data-original-height="426" data-original-width="640" height="266" src="https://images4-g.ravelrycache.com/uploads/MarionsMittens/652225147/upload_medium2" title="burgundy and fuchsia striped blanket" width="400" /></a></div>

In September we cruised on the Anthem of the Seas from Cape Liberty, NJ to Bermuda. We spent a fun two days touring the island. Since it was super hot we spent quite a bit of time shopping in Hamilton to stay out of the sun.<br />
<br />
I was surprised to see a sign for a yarn shop! It pointed down a little alleyway and of course I had to check it out based on the name alone. The Pirates of the Caribbean movie with its Black Pearl is one of my favorites. Also, one of my old cars was in the color "black pearl," so of course you can guess what we called it!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="http://www.blackpurlbda.com/">The Black Purl</a> is an adorable yarn shop and the owner was very friendly. My husband chatted with her while I explored the shop. There's a little bit of everything, including locally dyed yarn and some fun notions.<br />
<br />
I settled on a skein of Baah yarn. Although it wasn't as special as some of the local yarns, the color was exactly the same as the water where our ship was docked, so I chose it to remind me of our vacation.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I've never really worked from a knitting pattern. My grandmother Marion taught me how to make her mittens using demonstrated instructions that I later wrote down in a way that made sense to me. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I first released a pattern for thumbless mini mittens, I wrote the pattern in "my" language. But most knitters are accustomed to reading patterns in a certain format. I knew I needed to do some research into that language, as well as have someone check my work. Otherwise, my patterns would just lead to frustration for other people. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Getting Started with Pattern Writing</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The <a href="https://www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/how-to-read-knitting-pattern">Craft Yarn Council</a> provides a lot of information about pattern terms, abbreviations, and style. It was valuable to me as I learned the language of knitting. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/">Ravelry</a>, a community for knitters and crocheters, offers several options for pattern testers. There are lots of experienced crafters who are willing to help. </div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<br /></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
The Ravelry Pattern Testing Process</h4>
<div>
I opted for the <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/groups/free-pattern-testers">free pattern testers</a> group. The process is quite rigid and there are many rules to follow, both for submitting patterns for testing and for being a test knitter. The system that's in place protects both pattern creators and knitters from wasting their time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are several steps in the process including submitting a request for testing and having it approved, selecting testers, reviewing their feedback, and updating the pattern. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Each test pattern has its own forum discussion. Here are the ones I submitted:</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Working with Pattern Testers</h4>
<div>
All of my testers were great and provided excellent feedback to help improve the patterns for future knitters. It was fun to see their creativity - one used stripes, one altered the scarf to be longer, another added contrasting cuffs. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The pattern testers helped me learn about gauge and further refine the way I wrote my patterns so they are easily interpreted by any maker. </div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<br /></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
What's Next</h4>
<div>
I'm thinking about trying a crochet pattern next. I've had a lot of fun designing striped baby afghans and would love to share my ideas. </div>

I've had so much fun knitting cowls that I decided to release a pattern! It's very simple - an easy project for a beginning knitter and something relaxing for the more experienced knitter. The double moss stitch gives great texture to the cowl. <div>
<br /><div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVQSOk4T2meHdgh6aAGB-vOA4qi4Lim3L2TZOgOlttbcDAczm3MSPB0CXowZFGi4mnDSrP4PcsBxcL1gPjUzR26j0n7r-7e4DKCMW3dt6Kw8lxZXXISSIDdFj_CFWnhAO-kBxuRogTaVs/s1600/KnittingPattern.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVQSOk4T2meHdgh6aAGB-vOA4qi4Lim3L2TZOgOlttbcDAczm3MSPB0CXowZFGi4mnDSrP4PcsBxcL1gPjUzR26j0n7r-7e4DKCMW3dt6Kw8lxZXXISSIDdFj_CFWnhAO-kBxuRogTaVs/s1600/KnittingPattern.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="672" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVQSOk4T2meHdgh6aAGB-vOA4qi4Lim3L2TZOgOlttbcDAczm3MSPB0CXowZFGi4mnDSrP4PcsBxcL1gPjUzR26j0n7r-7e4DKCMW3dt6Kw8lxZXXISSIDdFj_CFWnhAO-kBxuRogTaVs/s320/KnittingPattern.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
Cowls were my project of choice when I was working early on to improve my knitting skills. My goal was to get really comfortable with knit and purl stitches on straight needles before progressing to the double pointed needles needed to knit mittens in the round. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the first items sold in the Marion's Mittens Etsy shop was a gray cowl. Interestingly enough, it was purchased by a NYC-based Shakespeare theater group who wanted to use it as chain mail in part of a costume!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our finished cowls have gone far and wide. Fun fact: one of the cowls is award-winning! Here's one taking home second prize in the scarf class at the fair:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtShTxnYAuSLtFF_I96eoA_LIK54ibbUmXfEbS53FSzNgYpPriqybOJb4rTLT-wGmdVDyHTz1e6qBd91EcUW10Lx66HwlGRpx0ZrAIMLn1fh5vqdnR9iMjlPl37gWXrQT6Ysm-k_v3VE/s1600/IMG_2589.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLtShTxnYAuSLtFF_I96eoA_LIK54ibbUmXfEbS53FSzNgYpPriqybOJb4rTLT-wGmdVDyHTz1e6qBd91EcUW10Lx66HwlGRpx0ZrAIMLn1fh5vqdnR9iMjlPl37gWXrQT6Ysm-k_v3VE/s400/IMG_2589.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
I've adapted the cowl pattern over the years. Over the summer, I discovered Fair Isle Nantucket yarn at Joann. The yarn is super soft and cozy and I knew it would be great for a cowl. I adjusted the pattern so that it takes a little less than one skein of this yarn. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt4o1-Y1Z8Shm1as3oNVr5w8No8el0VT7WGrzxMkgyjfwLB8A4CGB-GuqV5trHwXPtt3g9dnxYDfA_ozFCwqbmMv3Qtbll1L_W8eBL-eZuXi8Sp6IQKjrrnUmXuPpDNjF6qehbao9VIDk/s1600/MadeToOrder_LauraMacGregor_Photo4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt4o1-Y1Z8Shm1as3oNVr5w8No8el0VT7WGrzxMkgyjfwLB8A4CGB-GuqV5trHwXPtt3g9dnxYDfA_ozFCwqbmMv3Qtbll1L_W8eBL-eZuXi8Sp6IQKjrrnUmXuPpDNjF6qehbao9VIDk/s400/MadeToOrder_LauraMacGregor_Photo4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In January of 2019 a group of testers from the Ravelry Free Pattern Testers (FPT) group tested out the pattern and provided feedback. It was fun to see how the projects they made using this pattern turned out, and to collaborate with them to improve the pattern. <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-moss-stitch-cowl-2">Click here to see the pattern and projects on Ravelry</a>.</div>

Organization in January? Groundbreaking. (Just like florals for spring in The Devil Wears Prada.) Still, when you're stuck inside due to a monster snowstorm, organizing provides a welcome break from binging on Netflix.<br />
<br />
I spent a lot of time winding leftover skeins of yarn. My Loops and Threads yarn winder worked great for this project!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6ZlS2kq5IzRmPiwbUg9GUR-_u-Ybn88UCkMFlP7D0RSlN4eipkUjaPyq-912QA1NG0RPDIGAdGEuaA54p_WPYc_9JWdKWKrP1UletZi-KiBgTaQM-EuULY56zsFg0LmFmh8v7zt0I44k/s1600/IMG_2864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="yarn storage" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6ZlS2kq5IzRmPiwbUg9GUR-_u-Ybn88UCkMFlP7D0RSlN4eipkUjaPyq-912QA1NG0RPDIGAdGEuaA54p_WPYc_9JWdKWKrP1UletZi-KiBgTaQM-EuULY56zsFg0LmFmh8v7zt0I44k/s400/IMG_2864.JPG" title="yarn storage" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also inventoried my full skeins of yarn and determined I definitely don't need to buy any more. This is only some of it!<br />

Lastly, I weighed my smaller odds and ends with a postage scale. I sorted them into balls that are large enough to make a full mitten or smaller pieces to save for thumbs or strings. Hopefully this will help me save some time when I'm knitting from my stash!<br />

At the end of the year I always find it interesting to reflect on which colors of our mittens were the most popular. Year after year, black, purple, and red are always in the top five. Did they make the cut in 2018? Let's find out!<br />
<div>
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
1a. Red</h3>
<div>
Red moved up from second place to be this year's winner! It's such a nostalgic classic that it's really no surprise.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/112785047/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="213" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/007681/1536580720/il_570xN.1536580720_fodz.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/112785047/">red mittens</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
1b. Ocean</h3>
<div>
Ocean actually tied with red for first place this year. After not making the list last year, that's quite an accomplishment! We've seen a lot of interest in this color since it's so similar to the mittens that <a href="https://marionsmittens.blogspot.com/2016/08/the-perfect-mittens-for-frozen-anna.html">Frozen's Anna</a> wears. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/449394548/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="213" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/530467/878463240/il_570xN.878463240_9k5b.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/449394548/">ocean mittens</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
2. Dark Sage</h3>
<div>
<div>
This one is another newcomer to the list! This dark green is practical and works well for both men and women. I also was asked to knit a pair of mittens in this color as a Christmas gift for a family member. If you count that pair, brings this color into the second place slot.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/217154626/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="213" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/b62a58/721452876/il_570xN.721452876_b5u9.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/217154626/">dark sage mittens</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
3a. White</h3>
</div>
<div>
Third place was a two-way tie. White tends to be popular with winter brides who want to stay warm. It's new to the most popular list this year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/173061292/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="213" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/5d3af5/1584117929/il_570xN.1584117929_14hy.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/173061292/">white mittens</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
3b. Black Sparkle</h3>
<div>
Moving to the opposite end of the spectrum we have black sparkle. This is one of my favorites. It's yet another newcomer to the list. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/161911937/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="570" height="213" src="https://i.etsystatic.com/7419580/r/il/973418/1054185224/il_570xN.1054185224_a67k.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/161911937/">black sparkle mittens</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last year's popular colors were dominated by pinks. This year was much more neutral, with the exception of classic red. I wonder what 2019 will bring? </div>

This week's blog post is over on the Hook Nook! I was honored to be chosen for a feature by the team at THN. Jessica's <a href="https://www.instagram.com/the.hook.nook">Instagram</a> is beautiful and inspirational.<br />

I decided to write about strategies for success when you have a limited amount of time. Marion's Mittens is not my full time job. It's what I do for fun after work. But to make it work for me and my customers, I have to plan ahead.<br />

If you're new and just finding me from THN - welcome! I'm Laura, and my grandmother and I knit all the items you'll find in our <a href="http://www.marionsmittens.com/">Marion's Mittens</a> shop. We use her vintage 1940s patterns and super soft yarn to make cozy mittens and a lot more. During my road trip to <a href="http://marionsmittens.blogspot.com/2018/08/visiting-green-mountain-spinnery-in.html">Green Mountain Spinnery</a> and Basketville I also stopped at several Vermont antique shops. Big Red Barn had some reasonably priced treasures and almost everything was on sale.<br />
<br />
Buried beneath trinkets, the popped open top drawer of this piece caught my eye. Nothing catches my attention like a secret compartment or a unique piece of furniture like this!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vlkhpMRIUDN1dWuvcARyXNcthbdHYtX9bpoWXqOIicQQzysrWdkEpzaIfaiSxTy1-savk93Lg3TdKUhXelbJnNSXIpS7J8XhyQIKkRZW-YUZQamk53F3IqFu8MBkL0JA1Q3k052aroM/s1600/threadcabinet3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="antique thread cabinet" border="0" data-original-height="711" data-original-width="656" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vlkhpMRIUDN1dWuvcARyXNcthbdHYtX9bpoWXqOIicQQzysrWdkEpzaIfaiSxTy1-savk93Lg3TdKUhXelbJnNSXIpS7J8XhyQIKkRZW-YUZQamk53F3IqFu8MBkL0JA1Q3k052aroM/s320/threadcabinet3.JPG" title="antique thread cabinet" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a sewing cabinet with a swing out top drawer that has built in thread spool storage. It even came with a little bit of thread inside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihqTO3GhAqzEaDt7XUakKOw4ix5-OZq2toXkorfW-Qz7QNjCxyFgYZcfoT_120me6VLB9MFdnFOtQnOpevAGdXB1gr5y9LqWu1xP3nAyETejkKM7XC5_Ih-xaUs4if3i9KDMO5SmWBxC8/s1600/threadcabinet5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="vintage thread spools" border="0" data-original-height="697" data-original-width="743" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihqTO3GhAqzEaDt7XUakKOw4ix5-OZq2toXkorfW-Qz7QNjCxyFgYZcfoT_120me6VLB9MFdnFOtQnOpevAGdXB1gr5y9LqWu1xP3nAyETejkKM7XC5_Ih-xaUs4if3i9KDMO5SmWBxC8/s320/threadcabinet5.JPG" title="vintage thread spools" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It just looks like a normal drawer when it's closed. As you can see, it wasn’t in the prettiest shape when I found it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8HZQ6C1Q6vlT0oXTC7pzm-YwD-4zrBoUPCth_XdI6M4aNr7mCR1GnxUIXWml94Nl8OCsGwsquYCrKQ_i-86rcmkJ7L_KZa_Dwk8mcsBLFQqVk1miuJjyKzLXZtx7HbdWIk4jiFC9TlwQ/s1600/threadcabinet4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="antique thread cabinet" border="0" data-original-height="705" data-original-width="658" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8HZQ6C1Q6vlT0oXTC7pzm-YwD-4zrBoUPCth_XdI6M4aNr7mCR1GnxUIXWml94Nl8OCsGwsquYCrKQ_i-86rcmkJ7L_KZa_Dwk8mcsBLFQqVk1miuJjyKzLXZtx7HbdWIk4jiFC9TlwQ/s320/threadcabinet4.JPG" title="antique thread cabinet" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
A good cleaning and some beeswax polish made a big difference in how the cabinet looks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTm7VRP2BYoRTVsKDSGBBe8AH3_craa3bZv00qdM_Eugyuza-XQ1Oxmgx8dwzSPZV_BV8hrTcIMyKwejcAeqOeK2FpEGhIwm5BkOgM0yBY2twWXTX3iA-HTO-jrtUrBc1BtSCC87REZ-E/s1600/threadcabinet1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="antique thread cabinet" border="0" data-original-height="739" data-original-width="644" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTm7VRP2BYoRTVsKDSGBBe8AH3_craa3bZv00qdM_Eugyuza-XQ1Oxmgx8dwzSPZV_BV8hrTcIMyKwejcAeqOeK2FpEGhIwm5BkOgM0yBY2twWXTX3iA-HTO-jrtUrBc1BtSCC87REZ-E/s320/threadcabinet1.JPG" title="antique thread cabinet" width="278" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I did a little research and found similar swing out drawers for spools but nothing just like this one. It looks like the base might have been attached later, so maybe this was re-purposed.<br />
<br />

We have reached the six year mark on Etsy! While Marion has been knitting for friends, family, and local sales for more than 75 years, our venture onto Etsy was the first time people around the world learned about her mittens.<br />
<br />
Here are three things we've loved about being on Etsy this year!<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
1. Customers</h3>
<div>
Our customers are just the best. Whether they find exactly what they're looking for and order it without any interaction, or they request something custom and we have a lot of messages back and forth to get it right, it's so much fun to hear from our customers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYwQbtRb2M6HHS-8LTTU9BXnyIpnPu5OVf4X4h1VWw_zv49-uRK_zc0tKkZNKLGNVKZo7oake0dUrkKFjQr954wnU8_LRRueV1NmWv5N7_XuPPF2b3XtGshxU9sHlwGTEzZTv7Gk3UkvA/s1600/avgitemreview.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="5 star reviews" border="0" data-original-height="63" data-original-width="402" height="62" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYwQbtRb2M6HHS-8LTTU9BXnyIpnPu5OVf4X4h1VWw_zv49-uRK_zc0tKkZNKLGNVKZo7oake0dUrkKFjQr954wnU8_LRRueV1NmWv5N7_XuPPF2b3XtGshxU9sHlwGTEzZTv7Gk3UkvA/s400/avgitemreview.JPG" title="5 star reviews" width="400" /></a></div>

We love when customers reach out to us with custom ideas. Recently we had a request for a matching hat, scarf, and mittens set. The hat was similar to ones we already had (just a different color), but the scarf was a new design and the mittens needed to be in a size that didn't exactly match up with what we usually make. No problem! We were up to the challenge.<br />

<br />
My aunt made the hat and scarf. She has been making these on her Addi knitting machine. It's still very much a handmade process: the yarn has to be fed onto the Addi, the machine is cranked by hand, the finished item has to be removed by hand, and then there is hand stitching to finish the garment.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Marion made the mittens, of course. They were for someone for small hands and so made to custom specifications with a short cuff.<br />

<br />
We are always happy to take requests for customer orders. In the event that we can't make something - we'll tell you. But in most cases we are able to work with a customer's specifications. Customer orders take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to make and deliver. Timing depends on the season and how many other custom orders we've got in the queue.<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
This year marked my fourth year entering handmade items in the county fair and the second year of entering some items for Marion. It's always exciting to see if we win any ribbons and to find out what comments the judges leave for our items.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Knitted Baby Sweater</h3>
Marion's baby sweater took first place! She recently gave me this vintage cardigan to list on our Etsy shop. It's yellow with an extra special white detail along the top. She's been knitting baby sweater sets in this pattern for more than 70 years. The judge's note? "Perfect."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarionsMittens?section_id=15994042"><img alt="hand knitted baby sweater" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HZNVbqeCmGxwHBvSbm4OGCy4FmXXy90BKjRLdyLk8PR1Ff0AXTMhSN0I-dFOd5cPNIMAiQ6tAyNtSfRtGWFZA-opZj4ffW0oN1q_H7-WDnFFrc3RemySNJ5xw0Oe26Y7rk323Ifcg94/s400/IMG_2595.JPG" title="hand knitted baby sweater" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Knitted Hat</h3>
Marion's baby bonnet is knitted to match the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/200140947/">sweater set</a>, although I entered a plain white one that didn't match the yellow sweater. It won second place!</div>
<div style="font-size: medium; font-weight: 400;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: medium; font-weight: 400; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarionsMittens?section_id=15994042"><img alt="knitted baby bonnet" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBZ5FszbWYipdYmmC-vuPEbpcTj58tz_-B38q_DTO67DsXxKinbh7kNpPSdY-2OTbcSHdjHJHSBCyDxJaVja0-bIhdA0XyBB3sG5jiw8yOjSAKauHXhBfHA-7PQzc1fXQpRt5tx1IrfFo/s400/IMG_2596.JPG" title="knitted baby bonnet" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: medium; font-weight: 400; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Knitted Baby Booties</h3>
These booties are typically part of the sweater and bonnet set. They won second place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarionsMittens?section_id=15994042"><img alt="knitted baby booties" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge99xn-nI-MwLsrTT05APzOqAPmM-hqJuvWdh2jv4NZIaLlsg_qHklaXGKJp5V4xlavsWvJGNtTauUtdvZyyu0zYwe9rD1e0DJvRZz9506aslQ9HkVawRMfx710tkccIXwiGJ57KvjKRk/s400/IMG_2602.JPG" title="knitted baby booties" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Scarf</h3>
My super soft and textured <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/610312270/">purple cowl</a> received a second place ribbon. I wasn't sure how it'd do since it's not a traditional scarf. I'm glad the judges liked it as much as I do!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarionsMittens?section_id=12834441"><img alt="textured purple cowl" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoTp6VChCqxwP-TS7E5vO8VrvIn93qyVFAS3unL4KyLqfDZGSWb3Vxucq3Yy58LCcRXC6fHrdlSIl_Tq1HH7mFfUEQaQYV8aogHAdIo4VgilK9V8mKFkWI15s6WuRB82rGj2lQIYhSHRk/s400/IMG_2589.JPG" title="textured purple cowl" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Children's Mittens</h3>
I made a last-minute decision to enter a pair of our thumbless <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/220674677/">mini mittens</a> instead of a pair of kids' mittens like I usually do. It turned out to be the right decision! My mini mittens took first place in this class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarionsMittens?section_id=13969517"><img alt="knitted mini mittens" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDfbIazVIgUUXd6BCGXsPqlB7e6vmp8jF0MU0sCs2kmcDkP-aRHQl-Ek67EiHtGnZrQkvEsFzlYYuZ1XWaeHKiCHyugrSHA7O-hjcME5O2pL1kHQqBrt807qrw9Fl6uuxmPky73JN1sBk/s400/IMG_2591.JPG" title="knitted mini mittens" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Interested in trying to make a pair of these yourself? The pattern is on <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/thumbless-mini-mittens-for-babies-toddlers">Ravelry</a> and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171166660/">Etsy</a>!<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
4-Needle Mittens</h3>
This class was a head-to-head competition for us. I entered a pair of mittens that Marion made as well as a pair I've been working on this summer. Marion's were made from Caron Simply Soft Party in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/200137806/">Fuchsia Sparkle</a> and I used an alpaca fiber. I knitted the thumbs onto my mittens the night before entries had to be dropped off. They were a bit small but I didn't have time to do them over.<br />
<br />
Marion, the original mitten maker, won the class! My mittens were right behind in second place. It was the perfect way to close out the fair and the summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When <a href="http://www.basketville.com/">Basketville</a> was located in the Arlington, VT area I used to make annual trips to see what they had in store. Then the place closed down. I was exciting to discover this year that they're still open, in Putney, VT.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We planned a day trip to the area for some scenic views, basket shopping, and antiquing. When I Googled to see what else Putney had to offer, I discovered <a href="https://www.spinnery.com/">Green Mountain Spinnery</a>, a yarn shop. That was the perfect addition to our little road trip! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Green Mountain Spinnery is located right off I-91. I looked around the corner at the end of the exit ramp and there it was! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They make and dye their own yarn right at the facility. I peeked through the doorway from the shop to see what was in process that day. </div>

<br />
<div>
The shop is small but packed full of different types of fibers in a rainbow of colors. It was tough to choose, but I settled on two skeins of their <a href="http://www.spinnery.com/product-category/yarn/alpaca-elegance/">Alpaca Elegance</a>; one in a grayish purple and the other a dark green. This fiber is a 2-ply DK weight made of 50% alpaca from New England and 50% wool from Targhee (a cross between Rambouillet and Columbia sourced from herds along the Front Range of the Rockies).</div>

I was so excited to get into the store that I didn't notice the beautiful display in the entrance. Look at all of those pompoms! This pompom make was definitely impressed. </div>
