Choosing Yarn for Mittens

The number of yarn choices can be overwhelming. Marion prefers Simply Soft yarn by Caron.  Why is this Marion's yarn of choice? Read on to find out!

Durability
This particular brand of yarn is 100% acrylic. A synthetic fiber can better hold up to wearing and washing than a natural fiber like wool. That's why Marion's mittens are great for kids. The mittens retain their shape after lots of wear. The bright colors don't fade. There may be some fuzzing or pilling over time but it can be gently removed as you would lint from a sweater.

Value
Simply Soft is one of the less expensive yarns on the shelf at craft stores. (And Marion never buys anything without a coupon!) That doesn't mean it's not good quality; the yarn doesn't split when knitted and holds up over time. Marion's mittens keep your hands warm in reasonably cold weather because they are tightly knitted on small needles. When I was a kid I would double up on mittens so that my hands would stay dry while playing in the snow. They also stay a little warmer in extreme cold!

Color Choices
This brand comes in a wide variety of colors plus some variegated shades that aren't listed on the website. Marion can make your mittens in just about any of Caron's colors.
